The United States of America has a large number of people with gambling problems. This is thought to be because of the kind of exposure Americans have to gambling. Approximately 85% of all the adults in the US have gambled at least once in their lives, and 60% in just the last year. Some form of legalized gambling is supported in all states except for Hawaii and Utah. A number of states allow children under 18 to participate in gambling, and with the large number of children who illegally gamble on the internet, gambling problems are not restricted to adults alone. In fact, studies show that people who started gambling at a young age are more prone to developing gambling problems.
Most people think that problem gambling has only financial repercussions; however studies show that despite having all their debts paid off, a person with a gambling problem will still continue to have a gambling problem. This condition is not restricted only to the so called weak willed, as most people who develop problems have been termed responsible and strong by people around them, and there can be many precipitating factors for a gambling problem like retirement or job related stress, or general stress. The National Council on Problem Gambling in fact states that anyone who gambles has a risk of developing problems. They also stress that anyone who provides a platform has the responsibility of guiding the bettor towards responsible gambling; however they are not solely responsible for a gambling addiction.
The cause of the gambling problems is the individual’s ability to control his or her gambling, and this makes any kind of gambling problematic, however there are some kinds of gambling that have been known to exacerbate the problem. The factors governing the onset of a gambling problem by external problems are not well understood, but it is thought that the speed of the game affects the player proportionately. There is also a theory that believes that gambling problems could be because of the person’s genetic tendency to develop an addiction. Other factors include an inability to cope with stress, social upbringing and moral attitudes. from problem gamblers.
