Lay Offs Begin In California Casinos

June 11th, 2009 - Written by Glen

california state flagCalifornia has been trying to take over the gambling industry, stripping it from the neighboring Nevada, but rapid expansion can lead to ruin. Compacts with Indian tribes were approved, expanding gambling venues. New Casinos have begun to spring up. And layoffs have started.

The layoffs come from decreased tourism dollars and heavy competition amongst the many casinos. Forty two people have already been laid off from one casino. This was ten percent of the Colusa Casino Resort's staff. Claims of weakened economies and greater supply than demand are the reported cause of the lay offs.

Voluntary spending, such as tipping and gambling, are not as common in a slow economy. Choices have to be made about what will be cut from people's personal budgets, and casino gambling is not a high priority on many people's lists.

Sadly, despite layoffs, California is seemingly continuing to build more casinos. Arnold has been even kicking around the concept of legalizing poker over the Internet, making California the only state to have an expressly written policy regarding online gambling.
