14 Activists Arrested For Protesting Philadelphia Casino

Casino News - October 1st, 2009 - Written by Glen

activistsThe site of the future SugarHouse Casino was bustling with activity on a chilly Tuesday morning. It wasn't the din of activity caused by construction, but rather it was a group of activists protesting the future slot parlor that will see a ground breaking ceremony come October 8th.

Over forty protesters amassed in front of the future site for the slot parlor, linking arms in a human chain around the gate. One by one, police zip-tied the hands of the protesters behind their backs, and subsequently loaded them into police vans. Fourteen were arrested in total, and each was charged with misdemeanor charges of "failure to disperse" and "criminal conspiracy." The perpetrators were later released.

No injuries had taken place, and all trucks aiming to enter the site ultimately managed to reach their final destination.

Over hundreds of construction jobs and many permanent casino jobs are to be created through the casino's inception. This is a sharp contrast to the claims made by the protesters that casinos destroy lives and ruin homes. Unemployment is near the double digits in Pennsylvania, and the casino may aid to counteract the affects of the weakened economy.

The SugarHouse Casino is meant to be a world class slot parlor. Not long ago, the Rivers Casino was erected in Pittsburgh and has since thrived. If SugarHouse Casino performs as well as the Rivers, Philadelphia may see no reason to protest as employment and tax revenue problems begin to correct themselves.
