Gambling News - June 30, 2009 - Written by Glen
Barney Frank is continuously pushing for increased civil rights, focusing primarily on revamping marijuana and gambling related laws, but his main focus has been reducing the policing of online gambling. The Barney Bills have been gaining more support within Congress to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. These Bills would serve to not only cancel the UIGEA, but it would also serve to enable regulation.
Now that Congress is predominantly Democrat, Frank has been seeing some help from the ideologically similar Liberals that hold office. When he initially tried to introduce this sort of Bill, the Republicans, backed by the Bush administration, caused a large raucous and ultimately nipped the idea in its very basic bud before it had time to bloom and become reality. His idea may come to fruition, as four more have signed on to cosponsor the Bill.
If tax revenue could be generated from online gambling, then the Nation could see a boost in the budget. The slow economy has caused strain on our budget, and as times grow tougher, the U.S. is fishing for more financially liberating methods of income. Sin taxes have recently been on the rise, as any tobacco user will tell you, but any additional increase could prove to support the country in times to come.
Recently, the Federal Government has frozen bank accounts that handle the processing of poker payouts from overseas poker rooms. In a better world, the government would simply slice a percentage off of the top of each pay out and direct it to the Nation's coffers, rather then just having a large sum of money sitting in financial limbo waiting to be disbursed, sent back, or seized entirely.
Amongst the new co-signers are the representatives Michael Honda from California, Ed Perimutter from Colorado, Ciro D. Rodriguez of Texas, and Robert E. Andrews from New Jersey.
