Connecticut Keno to Curtail Budget Cuts

June 2, 2009 - Written by Glen

Almost every state in the Nation is beginning to drop its guard on gambling to save money or boost income. The usual suspects are all in place, be it new casinos, race tracks, or video poker sights. Connecticut however, will be making an effort to correct their budget situation through the use of Keno.

Connecticut's legislation has been contemplating the different avenues available to create gambling venues in attempts to revitalize their economy. Decisions went largely unmade, despite long debate over the matter. Last Thursday, however, an idea was put forth by Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell that would be focusing sights on Keno. Keno seems to be the answer to the financial tornado tearing up Connecticut, and Keno is what Governor Rell wants to see in the next two year budget.

Issues are always to arise when altering gambling laws. In this case, the creation of state operated Keno sources could conflict with the Mohegan Tribe's Compact with the State of Connecticut. This compact guarantees the Mohegan Tribe (Owner of two of the most renowned casinos in the nation) the right to operate casinos in the state. Speculation holds that this compact could be harshly violated if state run Keno were a reality - though this is merely speculation that still lacks proof. Legislators, however, do not believe this is a fact.

If the Bill goes through, keno games are expected to bring the state millions of dollar of income. The money would stabilize the state, preventing some programs from being stricken from the budget. The issue is being looked into, as to produce the most beneficial results as possible.
