Nevada Changes Problem Gambler Policy

June 2, 2009 - Written by Glen

Nevada, particularly Vegas, is the epicenter of casino gambling in the nation. Along with such easy access to casinos comes, quite unfortunately, a number of problem gamblers. Problem gamblers have in times past been referred to as having similar properties as drug addicts. Crime by those with gambling problems, like with the drug abusers, is not entirely unheard of.

It used to be a criminal offender who had commit their crime with the intent to fuel their gambling addiction, the book would be thrown at them and they would typically go to a prison. Last week, however, Governor Jim Gibbons put the final signature on a Bill that would help problem gamblers rather than punish them. They possibly beĀ  required to visit some form of rehabilitation center rather than a prison or jail.

The general consensus is that problem gamblers should be treated like drug addicts and sent to these rehab centers rather than jails. Where the accused and/or convicted will be sent will be a decision entirely up to the residing judge. "The Idea is to Correct, not punish," said observer Jim Thoth. It is understood by legislation that those with wavering willpower can be swayed toward a gambling problem, quite similar to the regularly chemical addictions, such as alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes. Furthermore, treatment would prove more effective than punishment in preventing future arrests.
