South Carolina has, perhaps, the most stringent gambling laws in the nation. Board games involving card or dice, and this includes Monopoly or Life, are actually outlawed under an archaic state law. Lawmakers, in the most recent session, made an attempt to change this worn out law by putting forth a Bill that would make it legal for different forms of social gambling games to be played. This would require that no money were collected by the house, but unfortunately the Bill failed.
Despite all efforts, the session has come to a close with no progress made. A second Bill was also put forth, which wold have allowed charitable organizations to hold fundraising raffles, but even that was for naught. Bingo is now the only game a charity can host without legal ramifications.
"This is ludicrous," said resident Tim Thompson. "This law is too old for modern times and we need a change."
During the next session, legislature may take another look at the issue. A Senate committee had already approved the Bill, but there was still too much opposition all across the board for it to continue.
