Massachusetts Gambling Law Reform Garners Extra Weight

May 19, 2009 - Written by Glen

Connecticut's casino moguls, more specifically the operators of Mohegan Sun, are working toward rekindling the initiative to reform gambling laws in Massachusetts. By opening an office in downtown Palmer, Massachusetts, they intended on refurbishing public relations.

Governor Duval Patrick took a stance on gambling laws during his election campaign. To summarize, it was his goal to convince state law makers to rework gambling laws in the state's favor. A snare has been encountered, as state Legislators have yet to waver on their platform of anti-gambling.

State revenue is falling, as it is in other areas of the nation and legalized gambling could push to help this set of failing financial figures. Job shortage in Massachusetts is also at a high. The creation of new casinos, and perhaps a whole government bureaucracy devoted toward casinos, could help with job related genesis as well as to stimulate the state's coffers and fatten their bank roll.

Massachusetts residents highly support legalized gambling within their state. One of the main oppositions to this goal was former house speaker Salvatore DiMasi, but he has since been removed. The new Speaker, Robert DeLeo, is in favor of legalized gambling, and is doing his best to fight for it.

Hopefully the decriminalization will take place soon - the state needs the extra funds. Job creation and tax generation could benefit the state more than a Stimulus package, some experts have said.
