NFL News - November 10th, 2009 - Written by Scott
The Seattle Seahawks will look to get within one game of NFC West leading Arizona as they travel to play the Cardinals on Sunday. The Arizona Cardinals (5-3) remained in sole possession of first place after their 41-21 win over Chicago and a San Francisco loss on Sunday. Seattle (3-5) kept their conference hopes alive with a 32-20 win over the Detroit Lions after losing their previous two games. A win by the Seahawks and a loss by the 49ers on Thursday night would give them sole possession of second in the NFC West.
Seattle's offense is averaging 20 points per game and is surviving by their passing attack which is averaging 236 yards per game. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has thrown for 1,307 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. Nate Burleson has emerged as his go-to receiver and has 562 yards and 3 touchdowns. T.J. Houshmandzadeh and John Carlson have also produced well and have combined for 789 yards and 5 touchdowns. The downfall for the Seahawks has been in their ground game. They are only averaging 84 yards per game rushing and have only gotten 3 touchdowns on the ground this year. Julius Jones is their lone leader at running back and has 386 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Defensively for Seattle, they are giving up 20 points and 322 yards per game. Their strength has been in their rushing defense and they are only giving up 102 yards, which ranks 11th in the league. They have done a good job in forcing turnovers and are getting 2.3 per game.
The success for Arizona's offense has come in their passing attack where they are averaging 262 yards per game. Quarterback Kurt Warner has passed for 2,175 yards and 16 touchdowns. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has lived up to his expectations this season and has 632 yards and 7 touchdowns. Arizona has been hampered by their lack of a running game. They are second to last in the league with only 79 yards per game. Tim Hightower and Beanie Wells have combined for only 593 yards and only 6 of Arizona's 24 touchdowns this year have come on the ground. The Cardinals' running backs will be challenged again this weekend against the Seahawk's 11th ranked rushing defense.
The Cardinals' defense has been very successful in stopping the run and are allowing only 93 yards per game. They should not have a problem stooping Seattle's rushing attack, but their secondary will be tested with the Seahawks' passing game. They have not defended the pass well all season and rank 29th in the league giving up 247 yards per game.
Arizona will be favored at home by 8 1/2 against Seattle according to BetUS sportsbook. The over/under is set at 46 1/2 and the total has gone over in 13 of the Cardinals' last 17 games at home.
