Sanchez Improving, Jets Favored Over Jags

NFL News - November 9th, 2009 - Written by John

jetsThe good news is regional Jacksonville Jaguars fans (the few remaining) will be able to see their team this week.

The bad news is they may not want to watch.

With plenty of season left to go, the Jaguars are away against the New York Jets, who are trying to win their fifth and get back into the AFC East race. The Jets are favored by 6 1/2 points according to BetUS Sportsbook. A bet on either team with the spread returns the investment at -110, and the over/under is 40, the second-lowest of any contest this week according to our NFL Week 10 Betting Odds.

The reasoning for the low number is obvious. The Jets have covered the spread in eight-straight following a bye and have gone under in 11 of their last 13 games.

Neither team has really been able to establish itself offensively, routinely winning games by fewer than seven points. The Jaguars pulled off that trick last week in beating the Kansas City Chiefs at home, 24-21. They needed a huge day from wideout Mike Sims-Walker, and he delivered with 147 yards and a touchdown. David Garrard started the game 11-of-12 passing and finished 18-for-27 for 264 yards and a touchdown. As good as Maurice Jones-Drew has been recently, he ran for 97 yards and a score which was considered a so-so day to his standards.

The Jets are coming off their bye week, taking the full two weeks to reflect on a five-point loss to the Miami Dolphins. After that game, linebacker Bart Scott was sarcastic, basically calling the Dolphins the greatest team in the NFL. It was enough to show the team's frustrations don't just stop at the fans who were hoping to leap into the elite. A win Sunday would help, but a loss would be potential disaster.

Mark Sanchez has recovered nicely from his five interception performance against Buffalo in Week Six. He has had back-to-back quarterback ratings of over 100 and hasn't thrown a pick. He has found comfort in Braylon Edwards, recently acquired from the Browns, connecting for two touchdowns in four games.

Thomas Jones leads the team with 704 rushing yards, good enough for eighth in the league.

But he is still short of Jones-Drew, who is sixth and has scored 11 touchdowns.
