NFL News - November 17th, 2009 - Written by John
The Washington Redskins are having one of those rare weeks in which they can relax without the badgering of media and fans. Sure, the fake punt touchdown pass was a cheapy, but it worked and the team is obviously trying to do what it can to appease it's stakeholders. They beat the Denver Broncos, boasting the no. 1 total defense in the land, with a season-high 27 points and finally looked strong from start to finish.
They look for the fourth win of the year this week, despite being giant underdogs. The Dallas Cowboys are giving up 11 points, according to BetUS, one of five teams listed as double-digit favorites.
In the last nine games against divisional opponents, Washington games have stayed under in seven of them. The last two, against Philadelphia and New York, have gone over.
Ladell Betts sufficed nicely for the absent Clinton Portis, becoming the team's back to eclipse 100 yards in a single game. He had 114 to be exact -- and a touchdown -- finally taking the pressure of Jason Campbell. With added time, Campbell ditched the happy feet he had been known for and threw for 193 yards and a touchdown. He finished with his second-highest passer rating this year (100.3)
The Cowboys shuttered when they looked at the tape from their loss to the Green Bay Packers last Sunday. In it, they saw an offense that completely abandoned the running game and left Romo out to dry in the fourth quarter. With no real threat in the backfield, Green Bay pinned it's collective ears back and bullied Romo in the pocket and forced him into several mistakes. Charles Woodson drilled Romo from the blind-side and forced a fumble that ultimately led to the game-winning touchdown. Later in the quarter, the Cowboys drove deep into Green Bay territory before Romo was picked off at the goal line, effectively ending the game.
Marion Barber only had one carry after the first quarter and Tashard Choice and Felix Jones split only six carries.
It wouldn't have mattered if the Dallas passing attack was overwhelming, as it was in recent weeks. But Roy Williams coughed up a costly fumble after a big gain, and then missed another pass right in his hands that would've resulted in a first down.
In fact, the defense was the only thing that graded out relatively well. They held the Packers to only 17 points, which would've seemed like enough before the game started, and sacked Rodgers four times.
Dallas remains a power in the NFC with a potentially potent offense, with no less than three viable targets lined up out wide. They have the sixth-best passing offense in the league despite ranking in the middle of the pack in terms of completion percentage.
But Washington, surprisingly has the single-best pass defense in the NFL, and is one of the few teams that hasn't allowed double-digit touchdowns through the air.
