Detroit Lions Positioned To Get Second Win

NFL News - November 17th, 2009 - Written by John

lionsEither the Cleveland Browns or Detroit Lions will get a second win this season.

They sort of have to, right?

The two worst defenses face each other on Sunday, and barring a tie (which would be both hilarious and symmetrical), on of the teams will become the league's newest multiple winner, while the other simply gains better Draft position.

The Lions at home get the edge by 3 1/2, according to BetUS, with an even -110 payout both ways. The total points is 38 1/2. Check out our NFL Week 11 Betting Odds page if you are planning on betting on this game or any others during week 11.

The Lions won't have much time to dwell on either result, though. They will have a quick turnaround the next week when they play Green Bay the ensuing Thursday during their customary Thanksgiving game. It will be a rigorous test for the team's new young stars, banged up and finally getting back on the field together. Last week was the first time Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford had been on the field together since Week Four, resulting in an improved passing attack. Johnson caught eight balls for 84 yards, although he hasn't nearly approached last season's 12 touchdown total.

It's been another difficult year marred by injuries, but key players will have a chance to pad their stats against the worst-ranked defense. Cleveland is 3-11-1 ATS in their last 15 contests, and are particularly vulnerable on the road.

Detroit's defense isn't much better, ranked just one spot higher than the Browns.

Look for this game to be relatively high-scoring, at least in terms of the over/under. Detroit has played the over in seven of it's last nine November games.

For now, Brady Quinn remains the starter despite a ghastly performance last Monday Night. He didn't complete a single ball over 12 yards, severely missing his receivers long late in the game, and only had 99 yards through the air. It was the fifth time the Browns have had less than 100 yards passing this year. Their best player, and their only real shot at the end zone, Josh Cribbs will likely be out after suffering a concussion on the last play of that game.
