NFL News - November 17th, 2009 - Written by John
The Jacksonville Jaguars illustrated their ability to fight for their collective lives last Sunday. Now, they have to prove they can continue it on a week-to-week basis in order to claw their way into the playoff picture.
At 5-4, the Jaguars got their best win of the season last week, eating up the final five minutes and kicking a game-winning field goal against the New York Jets. This week is a considerably easier task against the AFC East's basement team, and the Jaguars are favored what appears to be a manageable stretch for the next four weeks. With another blackout looming, Jacksonville is favored to win their fourth game at home, surrendering eight points to the Buffalo Bills, according to BetUS, with an over/under of 43.
History has made this game an appealing one for the Bills, however. They are 5-3 ATS in their last six road games against AFC South opponents, although they lost to the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans by a combined 72-27 in the last two weeks. And it doesn't help that Jacksonville is 3-1 at home this year.
The Bills have seen the worst of Terrell Owens so far, and it's starting to feel safe to say the experiment is that certain 'f' word. He leads the league in drops after muffing two last week, and was caught on tape berating his coaches for not feeding him the rock. The entire Buffalo offense, actually, has been bumbling. Trent Edwards came back last week after suffering a concussion and kept their game against the Tennessee Titans competitive, but he and Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns to break the game open.
The Bills have the fourth-worst offense in the league, gaining a mere 268 total yards per game. They are one of only five teams short of 2,500 yards on the season.
Jacksonville has been a bit better. Maurice Jones-Drew continues to be one of the league's top backs, cracking the top-five in rushing after a 97 yard day against the Jets. He is tied with DeAngelo Williams for fourth with 860. Mike Sims-Walker has 603 yards receiving, ranking in the top-20 in the league.
But Buffalo's pass defense is among the best in the league, snatching the second-most interceptions (16), and allowing the third-fewest yards per attempt (6.3)
