NFL News - November 17th, 2009 - Written by John
The Pittsburgh Steelers took a big hit from the Cincinnati Bengals last week, and will now have to work on a Wild Card berth. They will travel to Kansas City this week to face a team that is high off a rare win last week against the Oakland Raiders. The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off an 16-10 win over their hated rivals, and finally got something reminiscent of a running game. Jamaal Charles crossed the 100-yard border, the first for Kansas City this season, and did a lot to erase the memory of Larry Johnson. He scored a touchdown, too, giving head coach Todd Haley a few more options in the red zone, and Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers caught nine balls for a 151 total receiving yards.
All things considered, these are still the Super Bowl champs we're talking about, and the Steelers are still a monster favorite. BetUS is giving them a 10-point favor, with a -110 payout both ways, and the over/under is 40. The low number can be attributed to the fact that neither team has really exploded on offense. Ben Roethlisberger will likely hit the 4,000 yard mark this season, but those yards haven't translated into points. The Steelers are in the middle of the pack with 23 points per, including a difficult day last Sunday. In that game, Pittsburgh reached the red zone four times, but could only manage field goals, and fell 18-12 in it's first home loss of the year.
Rashard Mendenhall was finally slowed after a torrid performance in his first four starts. He was limited to 36 yards, a season-low, and didn't find the end zone. Pittsburgh has seemed to back off of it's rushing-first mentality, choosing to pass 40 times against the Bengals, and only run 18 times.
The Chiefs' previous game ran a parallel line. Only Charles scored for his team, relying on three field goals by Ryan Succop to provide the difference. At 2-8, they have only scored more than 21 points once this year, and that came during the Week One.
The Chiefs are 4-25 SU in their last 29 games as underdogs.
