NFL News - November 17th, 2009 - Written by John
With the top-rated passer in football, and a rusher on the brink of reaching 1,000 yards in just 10 games, the Minnesota Vikings are well on their way to a division title. Now, it's simply reaching the finish line without a hiccup. It's possible, albeit unlikely, that a bump in the road might come this week when they host the Seattle Seahawks, another one of those teams that has fans stumping.
The Vikings are 11-point favorites against the Seahawks, according to BetUS, a high number indicative of Seattle's struggles on the road, rather than a imbalance of skill between the two teams. The Seahawks are 0-4 as the away team this year, being outscored 126-64 in the process. But they have a history of performing well under the gun recently. In their last 11 games as underdogs of eight points or more, the Seahawks have covered the spread nine times. With a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck, and T.J. Houshmanzadeh to collect his passes, Seattle looks and feels far better than a team dogged by double-digits.
But if there's any team worthy of such a high margin, Minnesota is certainly in the conversation. The Vikings have a top-five player in every meaningful offensive category, racing to an 8-1 start with wins against good teams. Favre stands alone with a 107.5 rating, and Adrian Peterson is only behind Chris Johnson with 917 yards. He put together another one of those big days last week against Detroit, running over two players on his way to his first touchdown, then broke off another long scamper for his second and finished with 133 yards. He is projected to score 20 touchdowns for the first time in his career after totaling 23 in the last two seasons combined.
Even Sidney Rice is off to a career year. His 201 receiving yards were a career-best and his 786 yards overall are fourth-best in the NFL, after not even sniffing 500 in either of his first two seasons. Jared Allen leads a potent defense with 10 1/2 sacks.
