NFL News - November 23rd, 2009 - Written by John
It's starting to get to the point of the year when a few teams continue clinging to playoff aspiriations, while others simply play to snap their rope. With a 9-7 season the best they can hope for, the Buffalo Bills try to spoil the Miami Dolphins' two-game winning streak on Sunday and set the team back even further from repeat postseason trips.
The Buffalo Bills are underdogs by three at home this week, according to BetUS, with a total of 40, heading into the homestretch of a forgettable season that came to a crux last week.
Not only was it the first game without head coach Dick Jauron, who was fired earlier in the week, but three key players had to be carted off the field after suffering freak injuries. Right guard Eric Wood had his left leg snapped in tway when rolled on by a Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive tackle. Seth McKinney also suffered a damaging knee injury and will miss at least three games, and starting tailback Marshawn Lynch hurt his knee as well.
Without a full roster, the Bills try to slow down a streaking Miami Dolphins team that recently ran all over the Carolina Panthers to the tune of 154 yards. With a week-and-a-half to prepare, the Dolphins will try to implement the wildcat offense minus Ronnie Brown. The maistro behind the revolutionary attack will miss the season because of a knee injury, leaving Ricky Williams alone in the backfield for the first time this year.
Not a bad option.
Williams ran for a season-high three touchdowns against the Panthers, and hopes to shake the memory of pedestrian performances against Buffalo. In his last four games against the Bills, Williams has only 187 yards, the majority of that coming in an 85-yard game earlier this year.
For Buffalo, all eyes will be on wideout Terrell Owens, who finally broke out last week against the Jaguars with a season-high 197 yards and a score. He set a team record with a 98-yard catch, and whether or not Ryan Fitzpatrick can get him the ball with a makeshift offensive line will be the story.
Some in the Bills' organization actually think Fred Jackson is a better option out of the backfield than Lynch, though. His numbers concur. The former Iowa Hawkeye is averaging 4.1 yards per, and has 528 yards on the year.
The AFC rivals have played the under in five of the last seven games, although their most recent meeting, a 38-10 win by Miami, went well over.
