NFL News - December 28th, 2009 - Written by Bryan
Vince Young was making a claim for MVP after stepping in this season at quarterback in week seven with his Tennessee Titans winless at 0-6. However, following last weeks blowout loss to San Diego 42-17, both the Titans playoffs hopes and Young's MVP candidacy have been shattered. This week they face a Seattle Seahawks team that lost in similar fashion to Green Bay last game 48-10. They were thoroughly dominated on both sides of the ball and will look to regroup this week against Tennessee.
Titan running back Chris Johnson is just 128 yards away from eclipsing 2,000 rushing yards on the season. If he were to reach 2,000 yards, it would make him only the sixth player in NFL history to do so.
Last week against San Diego, Johnson accumulated 142 yards on 21 carries, as well as a touchdown. It was his 10th consecutive 100-yard rushing performance.
Young had his lowest output of the season, throwing for only 89 yards on 8 of 21 passing. He uncharacteristically turned the ball over three times, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.
The loss to San Diego ended the playoff hopes for the Titans, but they will look to end the regular season on a high-note against Seattle.
Nothing went right for Seattle in their game last week against Green Bay. The accumulated only 176 yards of total offense, and were completely shut down.
Quarterback Matt Hasselback was intercepted four times, which prevented any chance the Seahawks had to be competitive in the game.
The Seahawks have also been unable to rely on a running back to produce yards. They have had to use a tandem of backs to try and get yardage in the run game. Currently, RB Julius Jones leads the team in rushing with only 602 yards on the year and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Seahawks have had trouble all season stopping teams from running the ball. They surrender an average of 110 yards per game. Seattle will have their hands full with Young and Johnson. If the Seattle defense is unable to shut down at least one of those players, it will be a very long day for anyone donning a Seahawk uniform.
Tennessee should be able to establish Johnson in the run game and that will open up the run/pass option for Young. Young is able to create plays with his legs and will give the Seahawk linebackers trouble. Seattle should use a QB spy that will shadow Young on every play.
Oddsmakers have established Tennessean as a 4 1/2-point favorite to defeat Seattle this week according to NFL Betting Lines. The over/under for the match-up found on BetUS Sportsbook, has been installed at 43 1/2 points.
