NFL News - September 18th, 2009 - Written by Scott
The St. Louis Rams and the Washington Redskins are both coming into their game on Sunday with season opening losses. The Rams could not get anything going offensively in week one and were shut out by the Seattle Seahawks 28-0. In the Redskins opener, they fell behind 17-0 and could not recover as they lost to the New York Giants 23-17. Both teams were looking to rebound from sub par seasons last year and have not gotten off to a good start.
The Rams must find a way to get there offense moving. They only had a total of 247 yards in last Sunday's game and did not manage to score. Quarterback Marc Bulger was 17-36 for 191 yards and running back Steven Jackson was limited to just 67 yards rushing. St. Louis shot itself in the foot during last week's game with 10 penalties for 85 yards. Defensively they horrible as well. They surrendered 446 yards to the Seahawks. This football team has got to get things going on both sides of the ball. They have now lost eleven straight dating back to last year. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo was not happy with his team's play in week one but is optimistic about the rest of the season.
“The 2009 Rams stand on their own,” Spagnuolo said. “They have nothing to do with teams coming forward or any teams going backward. It’s all just about the 2009 Rams and we lost a football game, we lost one football game.”
The Redskins are putting their hopes in Quarterback Jason Campbell. Campbell is in his fourth season and it is time for him to prove he can be a great quarterback in the NFL. Last week, he did not get off to a very good start. He threw one interception while crossing the line of scrimmage and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. The Redskins only scored one offensive touchdown last week which came on the last drive of the game.
In last year's meeting, the Rams beat the Redskins on a 49 yard field goal as time expired. Rams running back Steven Jackson has had success against the Redskins as he has 405 yards from scrimmage in three games against Washington. If Washington running back Clinton Portis can get over the 100 yard mark, the Redskins should get the win as they are 33-10 when he goes over this mark. The Redskins are favored by 10 at home according to Bodog Sportsbook.
