Colts at Cardinals -- Those of you waiting for Arizona's run-game to finally pick up some steam probably won't have to wait much longer. Despite rushing for only 3.5 yards a carry so far, the Cardinals host the NFL's 30th-rated rushing defense in the late-night game Sunday. It will only be the second time this decade the two teams have met after Indianapolis eeked by, 17-13, in the final week of the 2006 season.
The NFC Champs are favored by BetUS to rebound this week, giving the Colts 2 1/2 points with a payout of -110 both ways.
Last Monday, the Colts were hammered by the Miami Dolphins' wildcat offense, surrendering 239 yards on the ground. Three different players had at least one rush of 15 yards or more. The week before, it was Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jaguars, who ate up 97 yards of real estate on the ground.
Now, it will be Arizona's turn. The Cardinals have been dying to get the ball rolling in the backfield after taking Beanie Wells with their top pick. He was supposed to give life to the backfield that ranked dead last in the league in '08, but has only had a minimal impact as Edgerrin James' replacement. He's only been given the ball 14 times in two games despite an average of 6.3 yards per carry. Credit Tim Hightower, though. He was able to improve as the feature back against the Jaguars with 72 yards on 15 carries last week against Jacksonville and his 17-yard dash is the longest so far this season.
But the Colts have proven they can still win while being manhandled. Last week they became the first team in recorded NFL history to have the ball only 15 minutes and still win. They were able to do it because of their powerful passing attack, getting five plays of 20 yards or more. Peyton Manning hooked up with tight end Dallas Clark for an 87-yard touchdown on the first play of the game, tying the Monday Night Football record for quickest score.
The key will be whether Rookie of The Year nominee Dominiquie Rodgers-Cromartie can keep up with Reggie Wayne. The sophomore had four interceptions last year, including a record 99-yard pick-six against St. Louis.
