Heading In Opposite Directions, Titans Meet Jets

NFL News - September 21st, 2009 - Written by John

titansTitans at Jets -- Since 2004, every Super Bowl winning team has gone on to win their next game, typically the first game of the next season, including this season's NFL Kickoff win by the Steelers.

The New York Jets said that their game against the Patriots last week was their Super Bowl.

So, it stands to reason that the Jets would be a lock this week to hand the Titans their second loss to a defending champ in just three weeks. Okay, so maybe it wasn't the Super Bowl, but you wouldn't know otherwise just by looking at the Jets. After all, tackle Kris Jenkins used the term Super Bowl when previewing the game. And upon their first home win against the Pats since 2000, New York has been oozing swagger, thanking their fans for being a part of the game and reveling in self-gratitude. Their confidence has been palpable and they are now favored against the Titans, who is still reeling from an 0-2 start after being the last unbeaten team a year ago.

It was the Jets who broke their '08 unbeaten streak at 10, but that was with Brett Favre under center. He has since retired, and then unretired, and the Jets are led by Mark Sanchez, who has played like anything but a rookie. In only two games, Sanchez has led his team to two distinctly different wins, breezing past Houston before rallying against the Patriots in a nail-biter, scoring 13 unanswered points in the second half. He has a 91.3 passer rating, throwing for 435, two touchdowns with only one pick.

BetUS is giving the Titans two points when they travel to the Meadowlands, hoping to right the ship before it's too late.

It's not for a lack of offensive production that Tennessee is winless. The Titans have out-gained both of their opponents thus far, and Chris Johnson went off last week to the tune of 284 total yards with two touchdowns of 50 yards or more. They just couldn't come up with the defensive stops, losing in overtime to Pittsburgh before a late-inning drive gave Houston a three-point win.

Looking at common opponents helps predicting the outcome a little easier. As mentioned, Tennessee lost their shootout against Houston, allowing 420 yards and four touchdowns through the air. The Texans' offense was, to put it lightly, ruffled against the Jets, gaining only 183 total yards and scoring their only touchdown via blocked field goal.
