NFL News - September 30th, 2009 - Written by John
Jets at Saints -- New Orleans is a NFC favorite hands-down. But the Jets have a funny way of upsetting favorites. Three games in a row they were matched up with teams that had a lot of preseason hype. And three games in a row they found a way to win a find themselves at a stunning 3-0, looking back at New England and looking forward to a trip to the Super Dome.
They will try to do what nobody has done this far, stopping the prolific Saints offense and escaping with a win. That's because Drew Brees has gone all Daunte Culpepper circa 1998 so far this season, throwing for 841 yards and nine touchdowns. He is the highest-rated quarterback so far. They became the first team in NFL history to score over 40 points in each of their first two games. But they were slowed down a bit last week when they made their second plane flight to the northeast. In a surprisingly tough Buffalo arena, the Saints were limited to just 17 points and underwhelmingly missed the 52-point over/under posted for the game.
Now, the over is at 45 against a much better Jets defense that hasn't allowed more than 17 points this season. But because of the big-play possibility, coupled with the comforts at home, the Saints are favored by 6 1/2 points over the Jets.
Critics have acclaimed Rex Ryan's New York defense as the NFL's best after bemoaning Tom Brady and the Patriots. Randy Moss only had four catches in that game and wasn't a factor vertically. And the Jets have had no problem telling reporters how good they are.
Prior to the New England game, multiple players boasted they would embarrass the Pats. Then, linebacker Bart Scott got into a barking match after Moss said Darrelle Revis wasn't a premier cornerback and that it is easy to play well with safety help. Scott retorted by telling Moss he was scared to go over the middle and wasn't a complete receiver.
Rookie quarterback already is the team's first freshman quarterback to win the first three games of a season. He will try to be the first Jets QB to beat the Saints this decade (though to be fair, the last time they played each other was in 2005 and Vinny Testaverde was still getting snaps).
