NFL News - October 1st, 2009 - Written by Scott
The San Fransisco 49ers will come into their game on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams looking for redemption. The 49ers (2-1) could easily be 3-0 this year, but lost a last second heart breaker last week to the Minnesota Vikings on a 32 yard touchdown pass by Brett Favre. The Rams are on the other end of the spectrum. They have yet to notch a victory this year an are 0-3. They lost last week to the Green Bay Packers 36-17. San Fransisco won last year's meeting 17-16. Neither quarterbacks, for the Rams or the 49ers, have set the world on fire so far this year, so look for both teams to grind it out on Sunday.
The 49ers must put their excruciating loss last week behind them and not look past the win less Rams. They will be without starting running back, Frank Gore, this week due to his ankle injury. Glen Coffee will take over in his position and get the start. With a passing game that has been less than stellar, they will rely heavily on their running game against a Rams defense that is ranked 27th against the rush. Quarterback Shaun Hill has only passed for 548 yards and 3 touchdowns so far this season. But, history is on his side as he has won both of his starts against the Rams.
Last weeks game against the Packers was devastating for the Rams, not only did they lose, they had some key injuries occur during the game. It is not yet certain as to whether starting quarterback Marc Bulger will start on Sunday due to his bruised rotator cuff. Bulger was injured last week in the first quarter on a sack that caused a fumble. If he is unavailable, Kyle Boller will get the nod on Sunday. Boller only connected on 16 of 41 passes and 164 yards after replacing Bulger last Sunday. Their injury list only gets worse as they lost leading wide receiver Laurent Robinson for the year. The Ram's receiver was hurt in the second quarter of last week's game. After losing these to key starters, the offense had very little production throughout the rest of the game. Steven Jackson is leading the way at running back with 288 yards on the ground. He is also second in the NFC with 60 carries.
Wagering odds on this game are St. Louis +10 (-120) and San Fransisco -10 (EVEN) according to Bodog Sportsbook.
