The Wait Is Over, Brett Favre Finally Gets To Face Green Bay On Sunday

NFL News - October 1st, 2009 - Written by Scott

vikingsA much anticipated game is set to take place Sunday night as the Green Bay Packers travel to play the Minnesota Vikings. After missing out a season ago, Viking's quarterback Brett Favre will finally get the chance to face his old team. The Packers will look to spoil this meaningful game for Favre and force a three-way tie in the NFC North. This is a crucial conference game, but the real story line is obviously Favre vs. Packers.

Both teams are coming off wins last week. Favre threw a heroic touchdown on the last play of the game to lift the Vikings over the 49ers 27-24 and improve their record to 3-0. Green Bay defeated the St. Louis Rams last week 36-17 to bring their record to 2-1. The Vikings won their last meeting with the Packers a year ago 28-27. They escaped with the win after Mason Crosby missed a 52-yard field goal as time expired.

Favre has been steady in leading the Vikings' offense so far this year. He has thrown for 566 yards and 5 touchdowns. He has recovered nicely from last year where interceptions were a big problem for him and has only thrown 1 pick this year. However, the offense has excelled on the legs of running back Adrian Peterson. He is averaging 6.1 yards per carry and has 357 yards and 4 touchdowns on the year. He should have another good game as the Packers are ranked 23rd in rushing defense. Special teams have also been a huge plus for the Vikings as Percy Harvin is averaging 35.8 yards per kickoff return with 1 touchdown. On the defensive side, they have already picked off 4 passes this year and will get plenty of opportunities this weekend as the Packers like to throw the ball.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers will finally get a chance to face his former mentor in Favre. Serving as his backup for three years, he has proven to be the leader that the team expected. He has thrown for 714 yards and 4 touchdowns. One area that the Packers have benefited from is that he has no interceptions on the year. He has two great playmakers at receiver in Donald Driver and Greg Jennings. They have combined for 442 yards and 3 touchdowns so far this year. The Vikings will need to have a good game out of Peterson to keep them from needing to rely on Favre. Green bay has already picked off 7 passes this year and returned 2 for touchdowns.

Betus Sportsbook has Minnesota favored by 3 1/2 with an over/under set at 45.
