NFL News - October 13th, 2009 - Written by Scott

new york jetsAfter a heartbreaking loss to Miami on Monday night, the New York Jets will look to stay in at least a tie for first place with the New England Patriots in the AFC East on Sunday as they take on their division rival the Buffalo Bills. The Jets lost in the final seconds to the Dolphins and the loss sent them to 3-2 on the year. After starting 3-0, the Jets have lost two straight and have a great opportunity Sunday to end this streak against a struggling Bills team. Buffalo (1-4) is coming off a tough loss themselves after losing 6-3 to Cleveland on Sunday.

buffalo billsThe Buffalo Bills have have had their share of problems on the offensive side of the ball. Buffalo has only managed 8 touchdowns in 5 games on the year. In addition, they are only averaging 15.4 points per game and are ranked 25th in the league with just 290 total yards per game. Quarterback Trent Edwards has been less that stellar and has passed for 942 yards and 5 touchdowns for the Bills who rank 25th in passing. Fred Jackson leads the team in rushing, which has been the lone bright spot for the Bills, with 363 yards but has failed to reach the end zone this season. Buffalo does not have a rushing touchdown in their five games. Terrell Owens is Buffalo's leader at wide receiver and has caught 12 passes for 202 yards and 1 touchdown. Jackson has the most receptions on the team with 20 and has 177 yards and 1 touchdown.

Buffalo has struggled with limiting opponents on the ground and are surrendering 154 yards per game. They have been effective with their pass defense and rank 6th in the league in this category. They have picked off 4 passes this year and returned 2 for touchdowns.

Despite their 3-2 record, the New York Jets have been consistent enough to win three games this year. The offense, which is led by rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, has performed as expected with the inexperience at quarterback. Sanchez has thrown for 916 yards and 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions this year. They have performed well in regards to their running attack and rank 7th in the league. The running back tandem of Thomas Jones and Leon Washington have combined for 496 yards and 5 touchdowns. Jericho Cotchery has emerged as the leader in their group of receivers. He has 360 yards receiving on the year with 1 touchdown. They will need to get their ground game going against the Bills who have shown this year that they have problems with stopping the run.

Defensively for the Jets, their play on this side of the ball has been the strong point for this team. They had a fourth quarter meltdown on Monday night which proved to be the difference in their loss. They are only giving up 17 points a game and are limiting their opponents to just 110 yards rushing per game.
