NFL News - October 13th, 2009 - Written by Scott
The Detroit Lions will look to get back on track as they travel to Green Bay on Sunday to play the Packers in a NFC North showdown. The Lions have been competitive in most of their games this year, despite being 1-4. They are coming off a close game loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday. Detroit came out flat in the second half after trailing 21-13 at the half. The Green Bay Packers (2-2) had their bye week last week and will look to regroup after an emotional Monday night loss to Minnesota two weeks ago.
Detroit comes into the game with questions regarding their starting quarterback on Sunday. Matthew Stafford started their first four games, but missed last week due to an injury. His status for the game has not been released. Daunte Culpepper filled in for Stafford against the Steelers and passed for 282 yards and 1 touchdown with 1 interception. Stafford has thrown for 894 yards and 3 touchdowns, but has 6 interceptions in four games. The Lions are led on the ground by Kevin Smith. Smith has rushed for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns. They could be without leading receiver Calvin Johnson on Sunday due to a leg injury. He has 325 yards receiving and has 1 touchdown this year. As an offense, Detroit is ranked 19th overall in points scored and are averaging 20.6 points per game and 322 yards.
Defensively is where the Lions woes have come from this year. They are allowing 32 points per game which is ranked 32nd in the league. They will need to improve on their pass defense as they are allowing 244 yards per game which is ranked 27th.
Green Bay will benefit from playing at home after almost a month away from Lambeau Field. Their offense is averaging 26 points and 340 yards per game. They are led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers who has passed for 1,098 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Packers have added offensive lineman Mark Tauscher to give more support in a line that has allowed 20 sacks in just 4 games. Ryan Grant leads their ground attack and has rushed for 257 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rodgers has two great playmakers at receiver in Donald Driver and Greg Jennings. They have combined for 528 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns. The have received great play from their defensive secondary and have 7 interceptions in just four games this season. If Stafford plays, the front line will need to pressure the rookie quarterback to allow for more picks, as he has struggled with his decision making while hurried.
