NFL News - October 27th, 2009 - Written by Scott
Two AFC teams will collide on Sunday as the Buffalo Bills host the Houston Texans. Both teams are riding two game win streaks as they look to remain in the hunt in their respective divisions. The Bills (3-4) beat Carolina on Sunday 20-9 behind solid play from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who is filling in for injured starting quarterback Trent Edwards. Edwards is expected to be out this week as well. Houston (4-3) held off San Fransisco and squeaked out a 24-21 win.
The Bills' offense has struggled all season. They have only scored 9 offensive touchdowns in which 8 have come through the air. Fitzpatrick did a nice job filling in for Edwards. He threw for 123 yards and 1 touchdown and did not turn the ball over. Their rushing game has to improve this week against Houston. They have only scored one rushing touchdown all season. Fred Jackson leads all backs with 417 yards but has failed to find the end zone. Lee Evans is their leading receiver and has caught 21 passes for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Their defense has kept them in games all year. They are only allowing 19 points and 362 yards per game. The down side to the Bills' defense is stopping the run. They are giving up 172 yards per game on the ground and will have a chance to improve this week against the Texans who are struggling with their ground game.
Houston has been showing they are one-dimensional on offense. Their passing attack has led the way all season. Quarterback Matt Schaub leads their 3rd ranked passing offense in the league. He has thrown for 2,074 yards and 16 touchdowns this year. Owen Daniels and Andre Johnson have emerged as the leaders in their group of receivers. They have combined for 1,031 yards and 9 touchdowns this year. The Texans have failed all season to establish anything on the ground and are only averaging 79 yards per game. They are led by Steve Slaton who has 341 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Texans' defense is allowing 22 points and 344 yards per game this season. They are also allowing 228 yards passing and 115 yards rushing per game. Houston must find a way to pressure Fitzpatrick who is making only his second NFL start.
Houston will come into the game favored by 3 1/2 according to Betus Sportsbook and Buffalo is 1-7 ATS in its last 8 games at home. The over/under is set at 40 1/2 and the total has gone under in 4 of Buffalo's last 5 games .
