NFL News - October 27th, 2009 - Written by John
The Indianapolis Colts will look to improve their record to 7-0 on Sunday as they host the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers (3-3) lost to Houston on Sunday 24-21 and will have a tough time ending their two game losing skid against the Colts. Indianapolis in coming off their 42-6 blowout over St. Louis on Sunday. This game is important for both teams, but probably a little more for the 49ers as they are just one game behind Arizona in the NFC West.
The Colts have been absolutely explosive on offense this year. They are averaging 29.8 points and 402 total yards per game. They are led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning who has passed for 1,880 yards and 15 touchdowns. Their only setback could be in their running attack which is averaging 91 yards per game which is 27th in the league. Joseph Addai and Donald Brown lead their group of backs and have combined for 486 yards and 6 touchdowns. Reggie Wayne and tight end Dallas Clark lead their group of receivers with a combined 1,027 yards and 8 touchdowns. The Colts have also done a good job of protecting the football and have committed only 7 turnovers in 6 games.
Their defense has been equally impressive and is only allowing 12.8 points per game and 291 total yards. The Colts are allowing only 179 yards through the air which ranks 7th nationally. They have also done well against the run and are giving up only 111 yards rushing.
The San Fransisco offense has not been as effective as expected and rank near the bottom in all offensive categories. Shaun Hill has only passed for 943 yards and 5 touchdowns. Their running attack has been sluggish all season and the 49ers are only averaging 98 yards per game on the ground. Their leading rusher is Frank Gore and he has only rushed for 273 yards and 3 touchdowns. Vernon Davis and Josh Morgan have been the standouts at receiving for San Fransisco. They have combined for 619 yards and 7 touchdowns. They will need to do a better job of protecting the ball as they have already lost 6 fumbles this year.
The 49ers could experience some letdowns again in passing defense as they face the top passing offense in the league on Sunday. They are 21st in the league in defending the pass and are giving up 236 yards per game. Their rushing defense is quite good however as they rank 6th in the league and are only giving up 88 yards per game on the ground.
The Colts come into the game as huge favorites in the NFL Week 8 Betting Lines, according to Betus sportsbook. The 49ers will be 11 point underdogs on Sunday against Indianapolis.
