NFL News - November 6th, 2009 - Written by John
A year ago, and even further back than that, Terrell Owens was shipped from port in Dallas to another team in the NFL in attempt at ridding the locker room of his perceived divisive personality and mentally draining antics. Through his time with the Dallas Cowboys, he clashed with the offensive playcallers, reporters who critiqued his play, and most of all, quarterback Tony Romo.
So when another rift has reportedly hit the Dallas locker room, this time via Roy Williams, Romo said he is seasoned and won't let it escalate the way it did in '08.
Williams told reporters earlier in the week that he was not trying to become a distraction like Owens, but insisted that he and Romo are nowhere near the same page. He added his belief that other receivers are being thrown higher-quality passes than he is.
Williams has been left behind this season, with only 14 catches for 249. That puts him 80th overall in the NFL, exactly 10 spots behind Owens. He is getting only 40-percent of Romo's completions and has watched three other receivers catch more passes.
"I didn't complain," Williams said. "I didn't complain that I didn't get the ball. I got seven opportunities (against Seattle). All I said was that, when it comes to me, it's not there. The percentages...back my case. I'm not saying it can't be fixed because that's what we do every day. We try to work on it and get it fixed.
"I'm not a T.O. or I'm not trying to be a T.O. I don't know why people are trying to put me in that category because I'm happy to win. I've said that 100 times."
On Thursday, Romo chimed in, arguing instead that the pair is rigorously trying to iron out their problems.
"I don't look at the numbers," Romo said. "We've been through this before with people trying to intersect and divide a football team. This team is too strong from the core.
"I know the media is going to make certain things appear what they may not actually have been or things of that nature. This team is too committed to winning and too committed to improving to let anything like that or anything [the media] may present to us divide this team."
It couldn't be coming at a worse time for the Cowboys. Winners of three-straight, they finally seem to be finding momentum in the passing game. Romo hasn't been picked off and Miles Austin is emerging as an elite pass catcher with a touchdown in each of the last three wins. They travel to Philadelphia for a crucial divisional game against the Eagles on Sunday Night Football.
