NFL News - November 5th, 2009 - Written by John
The Western Athletic Conference has taken a stand in defense of their beloved Boise State Broncos. The Broncos, currently ranked No. 7 in the BCS standings, are in route to another undefeated season. The conference feels that they are not getting the credit they deserve in regards to their record. As it stands right now, Florida and Alabama are the only undefeated teams ranked in the top seven that could possibly play each other. The other five have a reasonable shot at going undefeated, which could leave six teams without a loss at the end of the year. The WAC has now hired the PR firm of Scott Peyron & Associates to assist Boise State in their quest for a BCS bowl. The Broncos were snubbed last year after finishing the season without a loss and were ranked No. 9 in the BCS NCAA Football standings, but Utah was ranked ahead of them and got the bid.
"We've found that people just want to go back to the Fiesta Bowl win in 2007 and talk about that being a fluke and haven't really done their research in terms of [Boise State's] home game winning percentage or other interesting facts over the years," said Doug Cole, a group practice leader with the firm. "They'll forget about the Hawaii records and all that. So, we just constantly remind people of the storied recent history of the WAC and Boise State and get them to consider that when they write their stories."
Scott Peyron & Associates will assume the role of keeping the Broncos at the forefront of the minds of the media. The national media will receive weekly emails containing bullet points to remind them of the accomplishments of Boise State. TCU jumped ahead of the Broncos after defeating BYU, which was ranked 16th, and put them at No. 6 in the BCS standings. One of the arguments by the firm is that Boise State's win over Oregon at the beginning of the year, should count more in regards to strength of schedule.
"We made sure to let the national press know that a win against the 16th ranked BYU, which is now unranked, is not as strong as Boise State's signature win against No. 16 (AP) Oregon, which is now ranked eighth," Cole said. "Those are the types of things that dictate what our positioning is in terms of reminding media and getting stats in front of [the media] just so they can be honest and not ignore Boise State."
The Broncos still have five games to play, so this effort by the WAC could be wasted if Boise State should fall in one of their remaining games. If they don't, the conference officials could have a legitimate argument as to why they should be playing for a national title. After TCU jumped past the Broncos, their argument changed from a chance at a national title shot to just assuring they will be in a BCS bowl. Anything can happen though, there is still a lot of football yet to be played.
