NFL News - October 7th, 2009 - Written by Scott
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards appears to be headed to a new team as of Wednesday morning. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter has reported that Edwards will be trade to the New York Jets. Edwards has gotten off to a slow start this season with the Browns and has continued to engage in off-field altercations that have troubled the wide receiver throughout his NFL career. He is currently being investigated for violating the league's conduct policy after an altercation early Monday morning outside of a Cleveland nightclub. Reports state that Edwards assaulted a friend of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, Edward Givens, after a heated discussion. Givens is a club promoter for the View Ultralounge & Nightclub and says that Edwards punched him in the mouth after a few of Edwards' teammates tried to restrain him.
This is not the first of Edwards off-field troubles. In March, he was partying with Miami Dolphins receiver Donte' Stallworth on the night that Stallworth drove drunk and killed a pedestrian. He was also found guilty of driving 120 mph last year and fined $150 and ordered to serve 30 hours of community service.
Edwards had his breakout year in 2007 where he caught 80 passes for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. His numbers have dropped since that year and in 2008, Edwards only caught 55 passes for 873 yards and 3 touchdowns. He has been hindered by a number of dropped passes since 2007 and only has 10 receptions this year for 139 yards. It appeared as though his production would increase after the Browns named Derek Anderson the starting quarterback for last week's game against Cincinnati. He and Anderson had great chemistry in 2007, but last week he did not haul in a pass. During his five year career, Edwards has caught 238 passes for 3,697 yards and 28 touchdowns.
In exchange for Edwards, it is reported that the Browns will receive wide receiver Chansi Stuckey and special teams player Jason Trunik. In addition, Cleveland will acquire two draft picks.
The New York Jets are 3-1 and tied for first in the AFC East with the New England Patriots. By acquiring Edwards, the Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez will now have a great deep threat receiver in Edwards, a key asset that New York has been missing. It remains to be seen if the quarterback troubles that have haunted the Browns the past two seasons is the reason for Edwards lack of production. The Jets only hope that Edwards and Sanchez can find the chemistry to propel them into the playoffs this year.
