Colts' Sanders May Make Debut This Sunday

NFL News - October 22nd, 2009 - Written by John

coltsThe Indianapolis Colts' defense has been battered all year by injuries, yet still rank second in the NFL in total defense. Surprising, considering they have been without former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders all season and two of their top cornerbacks. Sanders, however, told reporters on Thursday that he feels better than he has in a long time and appears to have fully recovered from his ailing right knee.

"I feel better than I've felt in a long time," Sanders said Wednesday. "I feel excited about that and I’m ready to get in there. But we've not made that decision (about playing) yet."

Head coach Jim Caldwell was little less ambiguous. He told the same AP reporters that he believed Sanders would be making his '09 debut this coming week, when the Colts travel to St. Louis to face the winless St. Louis Rams.

"He's improving," coach Jim Caldwell said. "He's been ramping up his activity over the last three weeks and we anticipate he will be able to do something for us (Sunday)."

Sanders has been plagued by injuries his whole career, only playing in 43 of a possible 85 games during a six-year span. His most recent injury needed surgery and held him out of spring practice and the preseason. He wasn't put on the injury report this week for the first time all season.

Caldwell thought about bringing their Pro Bowl safety back earlier this season when Indianapolis played division rival Tennessee earlier this month. But it didn't appear that the team was in any rush to bring him back to soon with the Titans a hapless 0-4 at the time and a bye week coming the following week.

The team is still without cornerback Marlin Jackson until early November, but will also be returning corner Kelvin Hayden and tackle Charlie Johnson.
