NFL News - October 25th, 2009 - Written by John
After dropping two of their last three games, the San Francisco 49ers are obviously in need of a spark on offense. They get two this week when Michael Crabtree makes his professional debut, and running back Frank Gore returns to action after injuring his foot in Week Three against Minnesota.
Gore had just one carry in that loss to the Minnesota Vikings, limping off the field and never returning. He has slowly recovered in practice and didn't miss a session all week. He will be good to go and is labeled probable in the Niners injury report. When he's been in, he's been more than effective, rushing for 241 in two starts. In Week Two, before the injury, he ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns against the Seahawks.
He has a career average of 4.8 yards and has been the centerpiece of a Niners offense that has only recently gotten more dynamic. He has run for 1,000 yards in three straight seasons and will have to stay healthy to reach that mark once again.
Crabtree will be used sparingly in his first start. Head coach Mike Singletary said earlier in the week that he will utilize him on a play-by-play basis to see how much of the offense he has picked up. He missed all of the preseason and the first six weeks of the regular season due to a contract dispute. He will be welcomed if he can provide anything at all. San Francisco is tied for 24th in the NFL in receiving yards and tight end Vernon Davis leads the team in yards and touchdown catches.
