NFL News - October 29th, 2009 - Written by John
Seven weeks of the 2009 NFL season has given fans some pretty good insight into the status of the league. There is a large disparity between the great, and even good, teams in comparison to the really bad teams. Three squads are relatively awful, not winning a single game and rarely even being competitive. Three squads seem infallible, winning against quality opponents each week.
Then there are teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars, 3-3, with little indication to their direction, beating several bad teams and losing to a couple good ones. Yet, running back Maurice-Jones Drew, who a week ago said he felt unappreciated and under-used in Jacksonville, told reporters on Wednesday that he believes the Jaguars are the best team in the league.
"I think the Jaguars are," he said in response to that question. "We have a lot of young guys who are starting to get their feet under them. You guys expect me to say anybody else?"
No, not really. It was in response to New Orleans Saints' running back Reggie Bush's assertion that his team could go undefeated. Jones-Drew has already used the media to stir the pot once this year, criticizing the team for not getting him the ball enough. The next week he ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns. But reporters smelled a ploy, and prodded Jones-Drew for an honest answer.
"That's a very honest answer. I'm a fan of the Jaguars," he said. "I'm one of those fans, regardless of what the team does, I still love them. Each week, I think they're going to be awesome."
If that's true, he would be one of very few true Jaguars fans. The team boasts the lowest average attendance in the league, dipping below 50-percent in almost all their home games. They narrowly beat the 0-7 St. Louis Rams in overtime earlier in the year and have yet to really wow anybody. The low point came three weeks ago when they were mauled by the Seattle Seahawks, 41-0. After that game Jones-Drew lashed out against head coach Jack Del Rio in the media, as mentioned, saying he hasn't gotten nearly his fair share of carries and is simply a decoy.
No word yet on if Jones-Drew believes the NBA needs to be aware of the Charlotte Bobcats or Sacramento Kings.
