NFL News - October 14th, 2009 - Written by John
The Cleveland Browns have refuted a lot of things in the past, so take their latest denial with a grain of salt.
It would appear quarterback Brady Quinn would be well on his way to finding a new city, with his home in Cleveland boasting a "For Sale" sign and all. But head coach Eric Mangini said that is not the case and that the team has no intentions of dealing their back-up quarterback. Mangini told reporters Wednesday that he his "not looking to move" Quinn, although never quite denying that he was entertaining offers. Mind you, this is the company line given just days before the Browns shipped Braylon Edwards to the Jets for a bounty of fresh talent and draft picks. The team, which got it's only win last week sort of by default, could certainly use more bodies.
Quinn told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer that he would not request a trade and the house sale is simply for practicality.
"No, that indicates a house is for sale," Quinn told the newspaper. "I appreciate the free advertising. It doesn't have anything to do with what we're here for -- prepare for Pittsburgh.
"I'm a guy who doesn't want to continue to drive 30 minutes to the facility every day (from Avon Lake). I'm a bachelor who lives in a house that has maybe too much upkeep. There's other reasons (to sell it). I'm trying to downsize."
Ideally, Quinn would probably like another crack at the starting job with the Browns. He grew up idolizing the team and was thrilled to have a chance at being their quarterback.
Plus, his contract with the Browns has oodles of escalators that could turn this year's salary into more than $10 million if he takes a majority of the snaps and performs well. If he were to be dealt, he wouldn't make nearly as much money and would again be relegated to the bench behind someone who would in all likelihood have the support of his teammates.
Not to mention the fact that once a "franchise-quarterback" is dumped by his first team, it usually sends said quarterback on a journey to anonymity (see David Carr).
But it seems as if Derek Anderson is going to be the quarterback for a while. No, the Browns don't look elegant with him, but they aren't getting blown out like they did with Quinn. Part of that is because the defense isn't allowing 30 points a game like they did early in the season. But if Anderson can complete only two passes in an NFL game and avoid catching much flack, he probably won't be going anywhere.
And putting his house for sale seems to indicate he is getting much further away from Cleveland's stadium, not closer.
