Plaxico Burress' Fate to Be Decided Soon

NFL News - June 30, 2009 - Written by Ryan

As the month of July comes closer and closer, football fans, especially those partial to the New York Giants are eager to seem what direction Plaxico Burress is headed in.  With his next Court appearance coming later in July, Plaxico Burress himself, still hopes to play NFL football , this year.  However, if Rodger Goodell Treats Plaxico's situation with the same intensity as Mike Vick's Federal dog fighting case, then Plaxico looks to see many football games from the television set, not only for the 2009 football season but the 2010 as well.

Plaxico's indictment for felony Gun Charge in the state of New York will proceed with no delays in the month of July, allowing Plaxico some chance of playing if and only if the indictment favors him in some way.  The discharge of his Pistol in a crowded public night club, is in some way a reminder of how high paid professional athletes such as Burress think they are above the law.  The State of New York however, is known for it's harsh penalty on gun charges and would relish an opportunity to make an example of such a celebrity status as Plaxico Burress.  The District Attorney of Manhattan Robert Morgenthau has said in recent months that the likeliness of Plaxico being indicted is high.  The state of New York has a maximum sentence of 3 years, if this becomes the case for Burress, he likely wont get an opportunity to play professional football until year 2012 or 2013 depending on his release from the state penitentiary.

Plaxico Burress at the moment is a free agent hoping to sign with a team but, with constant monthly court appearances and the chance of being locked up for three years has scared owners away.  Plaxico Burress has some hope for a future in the NFL, and it all depends on Mike Vick.  If Roger Goodell fines it in his interest to reinstate Mike Vick for the up and coming 2009 season, after federal dog fighting charges and a two year sentence in federal prison.  Then Rodger Goodell might give Burress the same chance three years down the road, when this incident is much forgotten.  Vick however, unlike Burress, has pissed of many PETA members.  Vick's involvement with the dog fighting scandal is a looming identity of it's own.  PETA members have already made plans for disrupting football games if Vick is given the opportunity to play football.  This PETA situation alone might give Rodger Goodell just cause for delaying Vick's reinstatement to the NFL.  If Vick is not reinstated because of the threats of PETA, or any other reason, the chances of Buress's reinstatement in the future looks to be dim.  As Rodger Goodell is strict in his policies of fairness and equality among all NFL employees.

At least Mike Vick and Plaxico Burress have another chance to play professional football here in the states.  The UFL would love an opportunity to take high profile players away from the NFL.  Rodger Goodell might force Vick and Burress to play in the UFL if heir reinstatement into the NFL falls flat.  This might give the UFL a chance to survive past one year if they can collect highly talented athletes such as Plaxico Buress and former first pick overall Mike Vick.
