NFL News - September 5th, 2009 - Written by Glen
The Vikings' quarterback situation is one that has received plenty of attention, the negativity of which has been reaffirmed in the final preseason game for the Vikings. The Vikings, who were favored to win, were crushed by the Cowboys in a 35-31 loss. Okay, so they weren't crushed, but perhaps their spirits were.
Sage Rosenfels threw fifteen passes, only seven of which hit their target, and one was picked off. Rosenfels, who was fighting for the starting position before Favre joined up, started fine on his opening drive, only to get to the one yard line and get obliterated on the fourth. The interception Rosenfels had thrown ended up in a twenty-three yard touchdown, run in by Patrick Watkins, who had also stuffed a field goal. Rosenfels threw for 115 yards all night.
John David Booty also ended up throwing an interception, which also turned into a point for the Cowboys. Steve Octavien ran forty-four yards for the intercepted touchdown. Booty ended the night with seven of thirteen passes completed, accumulating 85 yards over the course of the evening.
Tarvaris Jackson accurately through half of his four pass attempts for the night, but ultimately led two drives that ended in touchdowns.
Neither team played many of their starters.
The Cowboys gave four turnovers, giving the Vikings 21 points. Romo was benched for the evening, along with Favre on the Vikings.
The game winning point for the Cowboys came after an impressive eighty-two yard touchdown dash by Jesse Holley.
The Cowboys backup quarterback, Jon Kitna, who was acquired from the Lions, was also spotty. Like a rookie, he threw one of each of the following - a touchdown, an interception, and gave a fumbled ball to the Vikings. Kitna ended the evening with nine completions out of his fourteen attempts, and ended with one hundred yards for the night.
Both teams rested their starters, considering the regular season kicks off in barely a week's time. Any sportsbook had the Vikings as the favorite, with the Cowboys an underdog on the straight bet and the spread. Dallas also managed to cover the spread, giving bettors a solid win. Romo and Favre are both preparing for the regular season, which begins for some teams on an explosive Monday night.
