NFL News - September 5th, 2009 - Written by Glen
In the preseason game between Minnesota and Houston, Brett Favre dealt a crushing blow to Houston's Eugene Wilson by delivering an illegal crack-back block. The controversy erupted when accusations began to fly and questions had been asked. Whether or not Favre was intentionally aiming to injure Wilson is what brought the situation to a head, and the matter ended with Favre being fined a sum of $10,000 dollars.
Favre lined up in a wildcat offense, and Percy Harvin took the ball, running toward Favre. Favre then barreled into Wilson, back first, and brought the defensive back to his knees. Even bigger questions were raised due to the fact that Favre had allegedly injured his ribs in the games prior to the Vikings Houston game. Wilson's left knee was injured on the play.
Favre stated that he did not intend on injuring the defensive back, he simply was aiming to assist Harvin on the drive. Favre issued in apology in a press conference, stating that he "hoped he was ok." He stated that "My [Favre's] intentions were not to hurt anyone."
Minnesota received a fifteen yard penalty as Wilson was removed from the field. This is a good indication that player's actions will not be condoned should they prove to be morally questionable. Favre will still be starting in the quarterback position for the Vikings.
Minnesota went on to win the game, and Favre was benched in the proceeding game against the Cowboys. The Cowboys ended up winning the game, though neither team played their starters.
