NFL News - September 28th, 2009 - Written by John
It is generally accepted that the Colts have been suffering without All-Pro safety Bob Sanders. Without his "headhunter" presence in the secondary, Indianapolis seemed all too pedestrian when it comes to stopping the run. They ranked in the lower quarter of the NFL in yards per game heading into Sunday night and, although they improved their numbers dramatically when Arizona only totaled 24 rushing yards, their defensive dynamic took another hit. This time in it's pass rush.
Defensive end Dwight Freeney said he "heard something pop" in his quads, reports ProFootballTalk. The extent of the injury isn't clear yet (he's set to have an MRI today) but there is no question how his absence will affect a team already banged up on defense. It's a miracle they've survived offenses like Arizona's and Miami's (the offense circa last week's Monday Night Football. Not the abomination this week).
Freeney was on Kurt Warner's tail all night, making contact with the aging quarterback four times, sacking him twice with a forced fumble.
If the injury isn't as severe as it seems, there's a good chance the team will be careful with him. He's already recovered from a catastrophic foot injury from '07 that mangled several tiny bones in the arch of his foot. If he can return, it will be vital that he doesn't favor any part of his leg more than others and add any extra strain on his feet.
