Poker News - November 17th, 2009 - Written by Glen
Mere months ago, a man had entered and subsequently won a ladies only poker tournament. A circuit event of the World Series of Poker was held in the Harvey's Lake Tahoe casino, which had been intended only for women, but saw four men enter.
Greg Sessler of East Bay California, a student of the University of California-Davis, out played the ninety-five players for his piece of the prize pool, amounting to nearly $10,000 dollars. Since it is against federal law to descriminate on basis of gender, no player can be turned away regardless of the tournament's format. Due to this, it is vital for males to respect the wishes of the tournament holders, though there is no way they can prohibit males out right from joining female only tournaments.
Sessler has stated to press agencies that he was not looking for an easier competition. Rather, he entered this tournament because it matched the structure and buy-in that he aimed to join. He claimed that this was the only tournament that interested him, ladies only or not.
Of the final nine, who were paid a piece of the purse, Sessler was the only male. When it came down to heads up play, he was pitted against Mimi Kalem of California. Mimi drew dead on the last hand, giving Sessler the top prize. This comes shortly after a similar incident had taken place in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Ironically, Sessler won with a pocket pair of Queens.
Maybe Sessler should spend some time at some Online Poker Rooms beefing up his game so he can hang with the big dogs.
