Poker News - November 23rd, 2009 - Written by Glen
Tom Dwan, also known as "durrrr" on Full Tilt poker, issued an open ended challenge to poker players around the world. In January of 2009, Dwan stated that he would take a heads up challenge against any player willing to risk the stakes. Dwan would put up $1.5 million dollars to any other player's $500,000, and the winner would take the pot.
The original rules stated that the challenge would be settled over a heads up ring game of either Pot Limit Omaha or Texas Hold 'em, all taking place through Full Tilt online poker. Dwan and his adversary settled into the Les Ambassadeurs in London to enact a live version of the challenge. Though watered down, the game held all the same rules.
Sammy George, a businessman from the United Kingdom, accepted Dwan's challenge. With stakes of $250,000 dollars as a buy in, the players entered competition. Through a string of solid hands and his normal aggressive play, Tom Dwan managed to brutalize the wallet of Sammy George. After having forced him to rebuy, the competition ended in Durrrr's favor just before the 500 hand limit.
Over Full Tilt, Dwan has been keeping an advantage over Patrik Antonious, his first challenger. He had walloped Ilari Sahamias already, and had lost to Italian player Marcello Marigliano. Dwan's 2 to 1 winning streak may hold up to the test of time, but he may see a new level of resitance in the near future - The "durrrr" challenge may be crossing the seas into American soil in due time.
