Sports Betting News - July 16th, 2009 - Written by Glen
The first day of the British Open came to an end, and the scores so far are not what were expected. The top ten are all very close, leaving small gap and less room for error.
Tiger Woods limped through the course, and ended his first day with bad news. He took 71 strokes, leaving himself one over the par. Many of his strokes were off target, leaving him at a slight disadvantage. If he is going to win his fourth Open title, he's going to have to step it up.
The winner of the last two years, Padraig Harrington, ended the day with just one stroke less than Woods, making his day on par. Harrington is looking for his third win in the Open, and indeed his third consecutive win. Feat that has not been accomplished in many decades.
Current leader is Tom Watson, and he is swinging at five under par. He has won five British Open Championships, and is working on his 6th. If he continues to shine over the proceeding days, he could accomplish that goal.
Five players are currently tied for second, a chunk of the field as an easy contender for first place. The game is close, regardless of current positions, as a good day for the stragglers and a bad day for the leaders could turn the tides indefinitely.
The weather has kept at a consistent chill, and the sun has continued to shine. The lack of rain will make the games easier for players, as the grass will be dry enough to allow a good spin on the ball. Day Two has already started, and coverage will be kept up throughout the day.
