As you may, or may not have known, Monday marked the start of Wimbledon, the most prestigious tennis tournament, in the World. Taking place from the All England Club, in London, England, Wimbledon is of the Grand Slam events, in tennis, and is a highly sought after title. The first day is in the books, and everything seemed to go as planned, starting with the weather. Wimbledon patrons were treated to large doses of sunshine, which is a nice break from the rain, normally encountered during the event. Since the weather stayed good, the new roof, at Centre Court, wasn't able to shown off. This is the first year that Centre Court has had a roof, and patrons are eager to see it in action.
As for the matches, everything was pretty standard. From Centre Court, Federer was able to easily put away Yen-Hsun Lu, in 3 sets, 7-5, 6-3, and 6-2. Other high seeds, in action, include Novak Djokovic winning against Julien Benneteau, in 4 sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, and 6-4. Perhaps the only upset, of the day, came from American born, James Blake. Blake dropped to Andreas Seppi, in 3 straight sets, 5-7, 4-6, and 6-7. Men's play will resume Tuesday.
From the women's side, things went swimmingly well for many of the ladies. Serena Williams took Neuza Silva down hard, in 2 straight sets, 6-1 and 7-5. Other matches include Maria Sharapova advancing against Viktoriya Kutuzova, 7-5 and 6-4. As for the upsets, there weren't many of them. The number 21 seed, Patti Schnyder, as well as the number 23 seed, Aleksandra Wozniak, were among the casualties, from the women's side, at day 1 of Wimbledon 2009.
Tuesday, the men's side will feature matches from likes of Andy Roddick as he takes on Jeremy Chardy, and local favorite, Andy Murray who will face Robert Kendrick. The women's billing should be a bit more exciting than Monday. On the draw is top ranked Dinara Safina, Amelie Mauresmo, as well as third ranked Venus Williams.
If all goes well, the weather will be exactly as it was today, nice and sunny.
