The first game in the finals of the 2009 College world series started out with a bang between the Texas Longhorns and the LSU Tigers. It had a moment that every kid thinks about with someone hitting a big base hit in the ninth inning with 2 outs. There was a total of 7 homeruns in the game and 3 of them came in half of an inning by Texas. The game went back and forth from the very beginning of the game when Texas jumped out to a 1 run lead in the top of the first inning when R Schimpf went yard. A little while later in the fourth inning, Texas responded with 3 solo home runs to give them a lead of 3-1 with home runs by T. Tucker, R Moldenhauer, and K. Keyes. The game was looking to be an exciting one after all of these home runs but the magic did not end there.
The 5th inning was scoreless by both teams but both teams did manage to get one batter on base. The sixth inning was another exciting for the fans that were able to watch the game. With LSU batting at the top of the inning, they managed to score 2 runs with 2 outs when J. Mitchell hit a triple out to left center field. In the bottom of the 6th with 1 out, R Moldenhauer hit his second home run of the game for LSU and K Keyes managed to score on a wild pitch to give Texas a 5-3 lead. This really made the local fans scream at the top of the lungs and made them start to cheer extra hard for their team.
If all of the excitement in the 6th inning was not enough to make this a classic game then maybe you will think that the 7th inning pushed it over the edge. D. Lemahieu hit a home run with 2 outs to get the Tigers within one run while trailing 4-5. The bottom of the inning was just as good to the Longhorn though. C. Rowe was the first batter up and knocked one out of the park on one of the first few pitches. This moved the Texas lead back to 6-4 and feeling a little bit more comfortable going into the eighth inning.
The 8th inning did not consist of any runs but the top of the 9th inning was a must see. S Ochinko hit a single to left field and was replaced by a pinch runner. The next batter got walked to give them 2 runners on base with one out. The next batter was T Hanover, and he struck out swinging on a nasty pitch that few major leaguers could have hit. With 2 outs and being the winning runner coming up to the plate, D. Lemaheiu hit a double to deep left field and scored the two runners that were on base.
The game then had to go into extra innings where the winner would be decided. Even though both teams were fired up and hitting the ball well at this point, neither team was able to score in the tenth inning. Two players were able to get on base for LSU with 1 out in the inning but neither of them were able to make it home. Texas also managed to get one base runner in the 10th inning when C. Rupp got walked with 2 outs.
The last and final inning came in the 11th and roughly about 3 1/2 hours after the game started. LSU started the inning off right away in the top of the inning with a walk by D. LeMahieu . He would later steal second base in the inning with 2 outs and made it to third on a throwing error by the Texas catcher. After one more walk in the inning, M Mahtook hit a single to center field and scored D LeMahieu from 3rd base to give the LSU Tigers a 7-6 lead and eventually the victory. That would end up being the final score in the game after a 3 and out by Texas in the bottom of the inning.
The second game of the 2009 College baseball championships will be on Tuesday night at 7pm. The game will be televised on ESPN and ESPN360 and is not available to those people that do not have cable. If the second game is anything like game one of the 2009 College baseball world series is anything like the first then viewers are in for a treat.
