United States To Face Brazil In FIFA Confederations Cup Finals

June 26, 2009 - Written by Jimmy

Coming into Wednesday's match against Spain, no one had given the United States a chance to make it that far in the FIFA Confederations Cup. Even though they had overcome incredible odds just to make it to the semifinals, many though the Americans would just be content with their accomplishments thus far. After all, Spain was the number one team in the World, and hadn't lost a game in 35 straight matches which included a 12 game win streak. Instead of bowing out, the United States had something else in mind that day, they wanted to win. Win is just what they did as they shut Spain out, in a 2-0 victory, while getting big performances by Jozy Altidore, and goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Now, the Americans must face a very scary, very fast, very skilled Brazil team, on Sunday, for the FIFA Confederations Cup Title. Earlier in this tournament, in pool play, the Brazilians crushed the Americans by a score of 3-0 and there is no doubt they look to do the same again. The Brazilians look for Luis Fabiano to continue his hot streak, which would surely help to secure a title for Brazil. Goalkeeper Julio Cesar must continue his solid performance, as he has only given up 3 goals. Those came in the first game against Egypt, a game which Brazil won 4-3. Since then, he has three shutout games.

Once again, no one is giving the Americans much of a chance, especially after the way they saw Brazil handle the United States, earlier in the tournament. Something that the United States would love to do is get revenge for that embarrassing loss at the hands of Brazil. Many analysts bashed the United States after that poor performance, but have now returned their support for the team. The U.S. must play smart, be quick, and think quick, to have a chance to beat the Brazilians. Tim Howard must step up once again, as must Jozy Altidore, and Landon Donovan, if the Americans want to pull off the upset.

The match comes live at 2pm EDT, from Johannesburg, South Africa, host country for the 2010 World Cup. The Americans' showing so far has been impressive, and has almost gained the U.S. Men some respect from teams abroad, and fans at home.
