The new top 25 AP poll is out following the opening weekend of college football with some drastic changes in a few team's rankings. Making headlines is BYU who jumped from 20th to 9th in the first regular season poll released today. They apparently got voter's attention after the biggest upset of the weekend when they defeated the 3rd ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners, who lost Heisman Trophy winner in the loss, fell ten spots to 13th. Florida and Texas remain No.1 and 2 after their opening weekend victories.
USC moves to No. 3 in the polls and will face No. 8 Ohio State on Saturday. Ohio State dropped two spots after struggling with Navy on Saturday. Alabama got two first place votes this week and moved up to No. 4. Oklahoma State now has their highest ranking since 1985 at No. 5 after they defeated Georgia, previously ranked 13th, 24-10. The Bulldogs dropped eight spots after the loss to No. 21. Rounding out the Top 10, Mississippi comes in at 6th, Penn state at 7th, and California at 10th.
LSU enters the polls this week at No.11. Previously ranked 14th, Boise State moved up 2 spots to No.12. Boise state defeated now unranked Oregon 19-8 last Thursday night. Following their loss to Alabama on Saturday, Virginia Tech dropped seven spots to No. 14. Following the Hokies are Georgia Tech at 15th and TCU 16th. Notre Dame moves up five spots to No.18 after they defeated Nevada 35-0. North Carolina is ranked 19th and Miami moves into the Top 25 ranked 20th after their win at Florida State on Monday night.
Falling out of the Top 25 this week include Florida State, Oregon, and Iowa. Iowa drops out after their lack luster performance on Saturday against Northern Iowa. Iowa needed two blocked field goals at the end of the game to seal their victory. Florida State and Oregon drop out after they both were handed losses in their opening games.
Next week's poll should not show a lot of changes, unless some unforeseen upsets occur in the Top 25. What will shake up the polls however is who comes out a winner in the USC-Ohio State game Saturday night. Two other games of interest are 15th ranked Georgia Tech against Clemson and 21st ranked Georgia against South Carolina. Both Clemson and South Carolina received votes in this week's poll, so watch for these two games to possibly have an effect in the polls next week.
