Alabama's Governor's Task Force against Gambling has been punishing the state's casinos particularly harshly over the last few months, and different forces have been at work trying to prevent the persecution from proceeding. Legislators have introduced bills to legalize the games, the courts have stopped the action, and the public has given an outcry. A recent poll by The Christian Coalition, a group opposed to gambling, showed that many Alabamians were heavily opposed to the raids against the casinos.
According to the poll, almost two-thirds of the residents that had been questioned were opposed to Governor Riley, as well as his task force, and the stance against gambling.
This poll's results were not as surprising, however, as the after shock. The Governor's office had spoken out against the poll, insinuating that the Coalition had been receiving money from gambling activists. The Coalition refuted this claim.
"We want to make it clear we are adamantly opposed to gambling in the state of Alabama," said Randy Brinson, chairman of the Christian Coalition.
In the poll, 400 registered voters from Alabama were randomly selected. Of these 400, 63% had opposed the recent raids against the bingo halls. On the same poll, 78% of the 400 said that Riley should be more concerned about creating jobs.
Ironically, the shutting down of the casinos reduces the number of jobs in the area.
Unfortunately, the Coalition's poll did not cover Alabama Online Gambling.
Despite the potential for controversy surrounding the poll, one thing is clear - if Riley continues his course of action, he may not retake office.
