Gambling News - January 25th, 2010 - Written By Glen
Governor Riley of Alabama has been waging a war against gambling within his state. Backed by his anti-gambling task force, Riley has been raiding operations that seem illegal. In the preceding weeks, legislation has been introduced that would legalize gambling, and the Office of the Governor has recently responded to the bill.
The response was delivered by Jeff Emerson, director of communications for Governor Riley. Riley stated that the bill would exempt the casinos from taxation and prosecution, regardless of where they operate from within the state.
"This bill rewards the Democrats' major campaign contributors by giving them total amnesty from having to pay their past tax liability or any future tax liability," said Emerson. "It's a bill written by the Democrats' contributors, for the Democrats' contributors."
The bill has been approved by the House Tourism and Travel Committee, which sets it up to be sent to the entirety of the state's House for discussion. Crafted by Marcel Black of Tuscumbia, this legislation would not only prevent future raids, but would also pave the way for future legislation to make it possible for casinos to operate within Alabama.
The bill will only legalize gambling temporarily, in a land based scenario. Alabama Online Gambling will continue unabated.
