NFL News - February 28th, 2010 - Written by Scott Mills
The Buffalo Bills have decided to part way with their six-time Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens after the program announced Saturday they did not plan on offering him a contract for the 2010 season. Owens moved into third place on the NFL career list with 14,951 receiving yards this past year, but he was not the only player the Bills decided to end their relationship with. Defensive end Ryan Denney and Josh Reed were also informed that they would not return to the Bills in the 2010 NFL Season. This early news for the three players allows them to get a head start in the beginning of the free agency period. The move allows them to become unrestricted free agents on March 5.
"We wanted to inform all three players ahead of the start of the free-agency period so they could begin making their plans," Bills general manager Buddy Nix said. "We just felt that was the right thing to do. All three have represented our organization with class, and we thank them for their dedication and hard work."
Both Denney and Reed were second round draft picks in 2002. Denney has recorded 318 tackles and 23.5 sacks in his career, while Reed has 311 receptions for 3,575 yards which places him fifth on the Bills' all- time career receiving list.
Owens caught 55 passes for 829 yards and 5 touchdowns in his only season with Buffalo. In his career, Owens has caught 1,006 passes for 14,951 yards and 144 touchdowns. The always outspoken receiver, who will turn 37 in December, will now look to be a part of his fifth NFL team during his professional career. Owens showed class after receiving the news he would not return to the Bills.
"I would like to thank the great fans in Buffalo, Ralph Wilson & the Bills organization for all their supports this past season," Owens said on Twitter according to the Associated Press.
Owens began his career with San Francisco in 1996 and spent 8 years with the 49ers. He then locked on with Philadelphia for 2 years, followed by 3 in Dallas and his only season in Buffalo.
