NFL News - January 20th, 2010 - Written by John
Last NFL Football preseason, the Dallas Cowboys debuted their monstrous videoboards hung directly over top midfield to give fans the biggest replay screen in football right in front of their seats. The only problem was the boards seemed to hang just a few feet too low and were struck by a punt during a scrimmage game against the Tennessee Titans.
And although Jerry Jones was allowed to keep his prized possession in place, without the lofty cost of rising them, several teams across the league apparently took notice. Count the Washington Redskins as one such team.
According to ProFootballTalk, Washington owner Daniel Snyder plans on placing two giant HD video boards at each end zone end of FedEx Field. However, the boards, he says, will be "punter proof".
The LED screens will be 100 feet wide and will apparently triple the size of previous video boards.
“Dan Snyder asked us to identify the technologies that would deliver a spectacular game-day experience to fans,” said chief operating officer David Donovan. “These upgrades to true HD video boards and control room will allow us to carry high-quality, multiple-angle replays, live game action and game graphics, as well as more frequent out-of-town scores.”
Although seeing a losing team in even clearer definition doesn't sound appealing, the Redskins have begun reshuffling the deck by hiring Mike Shanahan as head coach and are prepared to consider drafting a quarterback with their fifth overall pick in April's NFL Draft.
“It’s all about the fans’ ability to interact both with and within the game,” Snyder said. “We want everyone to be able to get the full impact of the competition on the field. These boards will enhance the experience of every fan in the stadium.”
