NFL News - February 14th, 2010 - Written by Jimmy
If it could go wrong, it did go wrong for the 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite a valiant effort to close the season, the Steelers missed the NFL playoffs, which ended any hope of defending their championship title from 2008. First came an injury to S Troy Polamalu's knee during the first game against Tennessee. Polamalu's absence led to defensive breakdowns, particularly in the secondary. On more than one occasion, the Steelers took the lead into the final period, only to end up with a loss. Overall, the Steelers finished with a winning record at 9-7.
There is little doubt that Steelers' fans are hungry for some more football. Ending the season, Pittsburgh had seemingly got it back on the tracks winning their last 3 games. Coming into the final week of the season, there were several scenarios which would have seen the Steelers in the playoffs, however they would need help in all of them.
In the finale, the Steelers faced a scrappy Dolphins' team which had it's own playoff aspirations. In a hard fought battle, the Pittsburgh rose above Miami, taking the final game of the year. Though the Steelers did their part, they were unable to get the help they needed to make it in. Their last push proved to be too late to get ahead of the Ravens and Jets, the eventual AFC wildcard competitors.
It's been almost a month and a half since then, and the New Orleans Saints have now claimed the crown which had belonged to the Steel City. Even worse, there are still four and a half months until training camps let in. True Steelers fans are undoubtedly sizing up the upcoming year, and speculating on the direction their beloved team will go. Good news for them, odds have already been released for the 2011 Super Bowl, and the oddsmakers feel pretty good about the Steelers' chances.
While they aren't the favorite, that title goes to the Indianapolis Colts, they are among them. Only a few teams such as the Saints, and Chargers sit in front of the Steelers. Currently, the online sportsbook at Bodog has established NFL Future Betting Odds for the Steelers at 12 to 1 to win Super Bowl XLV. While the Steelers Super Bowl Betting Odds were better than that to begin last season, one could expect there to be some doubt after the 2009 campaign.
2011 Super Bowl Odds for the Pittsburgh Steelers are bound to change throughout the year, after the draft, and throughout free agency. Furthermore, they update at the start of the season, throughout the season, and every week during the playoffs. Right now it is at 12 to 1. It will be interesting to see which way the line moves as the 2010 NFL season approaches.
